U12 Boys Gold Win 2nd Place in Newington Tourny
The Stamford Hurricanes Gold U-12 boys soccer team ended the spring season in fine fashion, amassing a 2-1-1 record and placing second in the 17th annual Newington Wrap-up Tournament, held on Saturday, June 19, and Sunday, June 20.

The competition started on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Middletown Magic, on goals from Fabrizio Obregon and Jackson Day. The Hurricanes went on to defeat the Guilford Lions 4-1 with goals from Rafal Bierezowiec, Jeffrey Beltran, Carlos Aspiazu and Day, who got his second of the tournament. Jack Ende and Matteo Socci provided solid defense, defusing threats before any damage could be caused.

In Sunday's action, the Hurricanes tied Fairfield's FUSA Blue with goals from Beltran (his second of the tournament) and Jose Vergara. This game should arguably have been a win for the Hurricanes as several shots hit the goal posts and scrums in the box weren't finished. The competition ended with the Hurricanes falling 3-0 to the Simsbury Galaxy, the tournament winners.

Matias Briceno, Nevan McCann and Kieran Mulvany orchestrated many fine attacks along with Christopher Cote, who was versatile as a forward and as a defender. The robust play of Evan Denny, Kevin Lam and Richard Ira provided a tough backline. Keeper Martin Villanueva made excellent saves throughout the competition and came off his line at crucial moments to defuse attacks.

The Hurricanes will regroup in the fall in the U-13 division. Players and parents wish to thank coaches Aidan McCann and Packie Mulvany for their tireless dedication to the cause as well as manager Paula McCann who epitomized the fine arts of organization and follow-up.

Spring U13 Gold Hurricanes go 8-0
Stamford U13 Boy's Gold Hurricanes go 8-0!

The Stamford Hurricanes U13 gold team ended their Spring campaign with a hard fought 1-0 win over Easton-Redding in front of a large and vocal crowd at West Beach on Sunday, June 20.This win ended a perfect 8-0 season for the gold team scoring 26 goals but more importantly only allowing 3 goals in over 640 minutes of competetive play. This is their second unbeaten season in a row and they have also won their last two open tournements.

The team members include: Ossie Acuna,Brad Cappello,Cristian Flores,
Scott Gavidel,Matthew Michael and Skyler Iafrate,Ryan lacey ,Giovanni Ninivaggi,Jose Novoa,Mahesh Raman,Christopher Ryan ,Christian Tomaj,Kole Tomaj,Gabriel Torres and Brendan Travers .The very able manager was Mala Raman,  Maurice Ryan was the coach and he was excellently assisted by Dave Cappelo.

The U13 Gold team was certainly a team that was more than the sum of it's parts. They trained hard three times a week, through the winter and spring. They truly played for each other and epitomised the idea of team over individual. The parents were equally supportive of the players and the coaches and showed genuine appreciation for the efforts of the teams opponents.

The team draws its talent from all over town.  The team had players from King Low Haywood Thomas, Greenwich Catholic, Trinity Catholic and every public middle school here in Stamford.  Players or their parents were born in England,  India, Ireland, Italy, Guatemala, Iran, Croatia, Mexico, Chile, and of course the USA - we could almost run our own World Cup All Star team! This points out the wonderfull diversity of soccer both socially and economically here in Stamford and speaks very well of SYSL as a true community based sports organisation.

Going forward the plan is to move the best players up to our established A team to fill the holes left by players moving on to high school .To restock the team with the best new players in town plus the best from our house leagues.  The hope is that when they have all moved on to High School  they will have all the fundementals neccessary  to challenge for a place on their team of choice.  [Contributed Story]

VIP Soccer Players come to Stamford

On May 14th Quality Touch Soccer Academy of Stamford put on a live training session down at the West beach soccer fields showcasing the u-9/u-10 Stamford "select" boys for Tab Ramos (USA) and Mauricio Wright (Costa Rica), two World Cup veterans.

Tab Ramos - former US Soccer player, national team captain and hall of famer played in La Liga in Spain for Real Betis, for Tigres in Mexico and the NY MetroStars (now Redbulls). Tab (originally born in Uruguay) played in 4 World Cups representing the United States. Tab now owns and runs New Jersey Soccer Academy, and has turned the club in to one of the most respected youth clubs in the country. They were just granted USSF Academy status (around 100 clubs in the nation have this) meaning they are considered by the United States Soccer Federation among the best in the country and will be scouted heavily for players to represent the USA national teams at all age groups.

Mauricio Wright - former Costa Rican soccer player, a key member of the Costa Rican national team for over ten years. He is now the manager of Brujas FC of Escazu. Wright was capped 67 times for the Costa Rica national team and started in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, scoring a goal. He also played (and scored) in the 1997 and 2004 Copa Américas. Wright played three seasons (1999-2001) in Major League Soccer, split between the San Jose and the New England Revolution. Wright has also played for Deportivo Saprissa and Club Sport Herediano in Costa Rica, Comunicaciones in Guatemala, and AEK in the Greek Super League. With Saprissa, he has won three national championships and two CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The two former professional superstars came to visit Stamford to invest in a new 3 v 3 soccer curriculum designed by QTSA technical director Antony Wilshaw (England). The event on May 14th brought New Jersey Soccer Academy (T. Ramos) and Brujas FC (M.Wright) together as part of a developing business relationship with Jason Segovia and Quality Touch. The Stamford boys got the opportunity to get autographs and play against the former soccer heroes in a small sided friendly match. Overall the day was a success and the association might in the future provide Stamford Youth Soccer with strong development potential down the road.
