Parents & Friends,
Welcome to the third edition of the SYSL Juggler. We have heard a great feedback about this e-Newsletter.

To make this a sustainable effort, we need folks at all levels of the league to contribute stories, photos and even video clips.  If you have a suggestion for a story or photos you want to share, please forward them to syslwebmaster@gmail.com.  Juggler articles should be 2-3 paragraphs long.

Everyone loves to see photos and videos.  If you have clips or photos, do send them along (It's helpful to have the subjects identified in a caption if possible). We will do our best to add them to the Juggler or post them to the SYSL Website.

Thanks for your continued support.

Parent Satisfaction Survey
Sruvey Screen Shot
In the last edition of the Juggler we let you know the numeric results of our February survey. In this issue, we are announcing the results of the text feedback.

We had quite literally hundreds of responses from over 500 families that took the time to answer the survey. The numeric content was a little easier to interpret (the survey tool gave us distilled metrics).  The  text comments took somewhat longer.

The good news is that the number one comment on the feedback - by a long margin - were compliments to SYSL.  That's not to say there were not plenty of other issues raised.  Please click on the link below to see what the Board thought about the results as well as their plans for the future.

The results can be found on the new website - click here to go directly to the survey page:

State Cup Fever Infects U13 and U14 Boys
The Hurricanes are headed for the State Cup Semi Finals!
Stamford Hurricanes Logo

Most years, making the State Cup semi-finals is a yeoman's task for any team in Connecticut.  For any town or city to have two teams in the Semi Finals, that's an extra-ordinary feat indeed.

This Saturday, June 11, 2010, the Stamford Hurricanes' U13 and U14s are both in their respective Connecticut State Cup Semi Finals.  The games are as follows:

Stamford U13 vs Suffield - 10 AM - West Beach 1
Stamford U14 vs Westport - 8:30AM - West Beach 2

We hope a large contingency of fans stop by to support our boys!

Great job all around!

On Saturday night, June 5, SYSL had its second outing to Red Bulls Arena in Harrision, NJ.  Twenty-two kids from SYSL House and Travel Divisions participated in the "Dream Team". In this event, they were all given uniforms by the Red Bulls and got to hold hands with either the Chivas USA or Red Bulls players and walk out on the field for the line-up and national anthem.  To see a video of the event, please click here.

Tab Ramos kicks the ball around with the U9/10 Tournament Team on May 14, 2010
Joshua Labkoff

This spring Stamford started a U9/10 Boy's Tournament Team.  On May 14, 2010, the team had a few very special visitors. Tab Ramos and Mauricio Wright came for a visit.  Tab is a former US Soccer player, national team captain and hall of famer played in La Liga in Spain for Real Betis, for Tigres in Mexico and the NY MetroStars (now Redbulls). Mauricio Wright - former Costa Rican soccer player, a key member of the Costa Rican national team for over ten years.

Advantage America leads Girls Division 3 by a thread

With the House season a little past its halfway point, Girls Division 3 is seeing some fierce competition.  Atop the division is Advantage America followed closely by the Washington Freedom.

Coaches Larry Katz and Frank Fazio of the Freedom find themselves only three goals behind Angel Ayala and Steve Labkoff's Advantage America team. SYSL wants to thank all the coaches and volunteers in G3 and all House divisions.  Without their volunteerism, none of this would be possible.

On a given Saturday morning between now and June 19, if you are at either Rippowam's turf field or Scofield Magnet School, keep a look out for some great G3 House games.

Good Luck with the rest of the season!

Coach's Corner
We are making an effort to highlight one or two of the coaches from the House program and one or two Managers and Coaches from the Travel program in each issue. We know there are literally hundreds of volunteers out there. We will make an effort to provide recognition to as many of our volunteers as we can in this forum.  If you have a parent coach or manager you want to see highlighted in this section, please send an email to SYSLWebmaster@gmail.com along with your story and a photo if possible.

Travel Parent Coach & Manager Michael Calle
Michael Calle and his wife Jennifer run a training company called Calle Fit. When they are not whipping their clients into shape, Mike volunteers as parent coach and manager for the U10 Boy's Stamford Hurricanes. Mike is volunteers as parent manager forthe newly formed Boy's U9/10 Tournament Team. Jennifer helps the team out as well as assistant manager. Jake and Daniel, Mike and Jennifer's sons, are very proud to have their parents going that extra step for their teams.

Mike was born in Bogotá, Columbia in 1966. As a child he played soccer daily with his friends in pick up games.  In 1975 he emigrated from Columbia to Stamford.  Very early on, he played for the SYSL House Division and later for the Travel Division.  In his freshman year at Trinity Catholic, Mike made the varsity soccer team, playing varsity all the way through high school.

After graduating high school he became involved with the health and fitness field, getting his Exercise and Fitness license from the American Council of Exercise and National Academy of Sports Medicine.  He works with adults and children teaching sports training both one-on-one and in groups.  In 2000, Mike and Jennifer opened Calle Fit where they run soccer clinics to many of the private schools in the Stamford area.

Today Mike works full time at Elite Health Services in Greenwich.  He is also the Strength and Conditioning Coach at for the Girl's JV team at his alma mater, Trinity Catholic.

Mike's involvement with SYSL as a volunteer dates back to when Jake first donned his cleats at age 4. As Jake moved through the ranks of SYSL House on to Travel, Mike followed his son and continued to volunteer his time.  However, Mike's really been involved with SYSL for over 30 years if you count him playing in the league as a child.

SYSL thanks both Jennifer and Mike for their year's of dedication to our kids.

Travel Coach: Antony Wilshaw

Antony Wilshaw
Antony Wilshire
It takes a special kind of guy to leave his home country of England and come to the States to teach kids to play soccer.  Aside from all that infernal coffee (Ant prefers his English tea of course) and cold beer (its rumored the English prefer their beer at room temperature) he has to deal with all of us Americans, our politics and our Tea Parties. Despite the challenges, Antony is the Training Director for Quality Touch Soccer Academy working with Jason Segovia.

Antony, age 31, hails from Stoke on Trent, England.  As a player he played with the National Schools system, played with Stoke City F.C as a school boy and as a youth trainee with Crewe Alexandra F.C. A lower back Injury forced his playing days to be cut short. However, from, this injury grew opportunity.  Ant started his coaching career in the UK at the age of 18 years old.

Antony started coaching in the US 10 years ago. He coaches at all levels from Recreational, Travel, Premier and High School. Antony has coached throughout CT, in NY, NJ and travelled the East coast attending Nationally ranked tournaments with past Premier teams he coached. Sixteen of Antony's former players now play within the USSF Academy System for various clubs, all starters, with two of his former players leaving the US this year to play overseas in Italy and Peru with professional clubs in those countries.

Antony is truly a professional. His coaching certificates include The English FA coaching certificate, NSCAA National Advanced Diploma, Coerver Certified and Antony has designed and written the 3v3 Soccer Curriculum that Quality Touch Soccer Acadmey has all its players train through.

Antony currently coaches the U9 girls Hurricane team, the U10 boys Hurricane team and Co-Coaches the combined U9/U10 boys Select team with Jason Segovia here in Stamford.

If you are down at West Beach any afternoon, you are bound to see Ant in his bright green QTSA coaching uniform.
Keeping our Kids Safe
As spring turns to summer, the heat that is a New England Summer can't be far behind. Soccer is a very demanding sport. Kids can run for extended periods of time under the heat of a summer sun.

SYSL wants to remind parents to make sure your children are protected from the sun in the following ways so that Soccer can continue to be an enjoyable sport.

  • Ensure that your child has protection from the sun. Please give your kids a good "slathering" of sun block (preferably the kind that is for sports so it does not sweat off) before practices and games. Please use a lotion with a high SPF rating.
  • Hydration is KEY to good health in summer sports.  Ensure that your child has a good source of hydration for both practices and games - be they in House or Travel.  While Gatorade and other sports drinks are high in sugar, they are also high in electrolytes.  Having one sports drink and a few bottles of water should do the trick on a hot day.
  • Parents should be aware that drinking ONLY water in large quantities can result in water intoxication, a medical condition that can be extremely serious and dangerous. If your child is going to be playing hard for extended periods, such as in a camp situation, do ensure that your child has at least one sports drink or fruit juice in addition to water during high heat days.
Our goal during the summer months is to keep your children enjoying soccer while remaining safe.  Make sure they have the equipment and hydration they need.
